CFA Level 1 Practical Skills Module Deadline: Can Forgetting Your PSM Void Your Exam Result?

You finish the CFA Level I exam, wait several weeks for results, and then realize you never completed your Practical Skills Module (PSM). Does CFA Institute simply hold your result until you finish it?
According to CFA Institute’s official PSM policy, the consequence can be much more serious: if you do not complete and submit a PSM by the time exam results are released, your exam result is voided and you will not receive a pass or fail result. To continue in the CFA Program, you must register again, pay the applicable fees, and retake the same exam level.
That makes the PSM deadline very different from an ordinary administrative reminder.
The Deadline Is Results Release, Not Exam Day
CFA Level I candidates do not have to finish their PSM before sitting the exam.
CFA Institute allows candidates to begin a PSM at any point after registration: before the main study period, during exam preparation, or even after taking the exam. The hard deadline is the date results are released.
Level I results are normally available approximately 5–7 weeks after the exam, although candidates should rely on CFA Institute’s communications for their specific testing window.
That post-exam period can therefore function as a safety buffer—but treating it as your planned PSM study period creates an unnecessary risk.
“My Exam Is Finished” Does Not Mean Your Level I Requirement Is Finished
The important distinction is between taking the examination and becoming eligible to receive the examination result.
CFA Institute requires completion of one PSM at each CFA Program level. For 2026 Level I candidates, the available modules listed by CFA Institute are:
Financial Modeling
Python Programming Fundamentals
Only one must be completed at Level I. However, the same PSM cannot later be reused to satisfy the requirement at another level.
The modules are practical training rather than another section of the Level I examination. CFA Institute’s Level I quick-start guidance states that PSM content is not tested on the exam, while completion is still mandatory for release of the candidate’s result.
This creates an unusual situation: you could have performed well enough to pass the examination itself but still never receive that pass result because the separate PSM requirement was not completed.
Do Not Confuse “Started” With “Completed”
Opening the module is not enough.
CFA Institute estimates that each PSM requires approximately 10–20 hours and specifically instructs candidates to ensure completion by clicking the required “Continue” or “Finish Task” button within the module.
This suggests a useful final check: do not rely on memory that you watched most of the videos or completed most exercises. Verify in your account that the module is actually recorded as finished.
A candidate who is 95% through a PSM at the deadline has not satisfied a requirement that calls for completion.
What If You Fail Level I Anyway? CFA Level 1 Practical Skills Module Deadline, PSM
The PSM still matters because you cannot receive the result without completing it.
There is, however, one useful rule. CFA Institute states that if you complete the Level I PSM and subsequently fail the exam, you do not need to complete another PSM when repeating Level I. The next PSM requirement arises when you progress to the next level.
Completing the module early therefore does not become wasted effort if the exam itself has to be retaken. CFA Level 1 Practical Skills Module Deadline, PSM
A Better Personal Deadline: Before Exam Week
The official deadline is results release. Your personal deadline should probably be earlier.
A sensible strategy is to schedule the PSM before the final intensive revision period or complete it soon after your exam rather than allowing it to drift toward results day.
The reason is asymmetric risk. Finishing the PSM early costs roughly 10–20 hours that you must complete anyway. Forgetting it can cost an entire exam result, another registration fee, and another Level I attempt.
For CFA Level I candidates, therefore, the PSM should not be treated as an optional career-development extra. Passing the exam and satisfying the requirement to receive that result are two separate tasks—and the CFA journey is not complete until both are done.
