CFA Level 2 November 2026: Should You Choose November or Wait Until May 2027?

Choosing between November 2026 and May 2027 is not a question of which exam window is easier. CFA Institute uses a formal standard-setting and equating process to maintain comparable passing standards across administrations. Recent results also provide no reliable evidence of an “easy window”: the November 2025 Level II pass rate was 42%, while May 2026 was 43%. The ten-year Level II average is approximately 45%.
The real question is whether the additional months would materially improve your preparation—or merely extend it.
The Immediate November Deadline
At the time of writing, candidates considering November must decide quickly. CFA Institute’s published timetable identifies 11 August 2026 as the end of the relevant standard registration period. Candidates who register between 16 April and 11 August have until 19 August to submit a disability-accommodations request.
Do not register simply because the deadline is approaching. First determine whether November provides enough time for both curriculum learning and exam-format practice.
What November Actually Requires
CFA Institute reports that successful candidates spend more than 300 hours preparing for each exam level. With roughly three and a half months remaining, someone beginning now would need approximately 20 focused study hours per week to reach 300 hours.
That calculation should include only productive work: solving item sets, retrieving formulas, reviewing mistakes and explaining valuation decisions. Passive rereading and repeatedly reorganizing notes should not be counted as equivalent preparation.
Level II contains 22 vignette-based item sets and 88 multiple-choice questions, divided into two 132-minute sessions. Twenty item sets are scored and two are unscored trial sets. Candidates must also complete a Practical Skills Module before receiving their result.
Finishing the readings is therefore not enough. You need time to practise extracting relevant facts from vignettes, identifying the correct valuation framework, rejecting distracting information and completing 11 item sets within 132 minutes.
Use This November Readiness Test
The following is a practical planning framework—not an official CFA Institute passing threshold.
Choose November only when all four conditions are realistic:
You can finish your first curriculum pass by late September. This leaves approximately six weeks for mixed item sets, mock exams, formula retrieval and targeted error correction.
You can protect 18–22 study hours every week. Count only hours that already fit around work, commuting, family responsibilities and planned travel. Do not depend on hypothetical “catch-up weekends.”
Your weaknesses are concentrated rather than universal. Complete one timed, 11-item-set diagnostic using unseen questions. If most errors come from a limited number of learning outcomes, November may remain realistic. If basic interpretation and formula-selection errors appear across nearly every topic, May is safer.
You can begin vignette practice immediately. Waiting until every reading is complete is risky because Level II assesses analysis and application rather than isolated recall.
When May 2027 Is the Better Decision
Wait until May when you are beginning almost from zero, cannot maintain the necessary weekly workload or need to rebuild Level I foundations before tackling Level II valuation and portfolio applications.
May may also be preferable when financial assistance affects your decision. CFA Institute’s Access Scholarship application window for the May 2027 Level I and II exams opens on 12 August 2026, closes on 1 September 2026, and has a decision date of 25 September 2026.
Waiting, however, introduces two important changes.
First, the 2027 curriculum applies to exams beginning in February 2027. CFA Institute has announced updated ethics content across all three levels and enhancements to Level II Practical Skills Modules. Candidates choosing May should therefore use the correct 2027 materials rather than assume their 2026 preparation transfers unchanged.
Second, CFA Institute is eliminating paid deferrals for 2027 exam administrations. Candidates registered for a 2026 exam may still be eligible for a USD 449 paid deferral, but candidates choosing May 2027 should not register on the assumption that they can later purchase additional time.
Do Not Postpone Without a Specific Gain CFA Level 2 November 2026 or May 2027
For the November 2025 Level II exam, first-time candidates passed at 50%, compared with 27% among candidates who had previously deferred. This does not prove that deferral causes failure because the groups may differ in preparation and circumstances. It does show that postponement alone is not a study strategy. CFA Level 2 November 2026 or May 2027
Choose November if you can finish the curriculum by late September, sustain the required weekly hours and reserve the final six weeks for timed item sets and mocks.
Choose May when the extra period will produce a defined improvement: rebuilding prerequisites, following a structured first pass, obtaining financial support or creating substantially more practice time.
The wrong reason to wait is fear. The right reason is a documented preparation gap that cannot be repaired responsibly before November.
