GARP SCR Exam 2026: What the Experience Is Actually Like on Exam Day

You have spent weeks studying climate risk frameworks, transition planning, green finance instruments, and sustainability governance. But no matter how well you know the material, walking into exam day without knowing what to actually expect can shake even the most prepared candidate. This article pulls directly from GARP's official 2026 resources to give you a clear, honest picture of the SCR exam experience — from the moment you schedule your appointment to the moment you click submit. GARP SCR Certificate 2026

Choosing Your Format: In-Person or Online

The SCR exam is offered twice a year, in April and October, and candidates can choose between two delivery formats: an in-person computer-based test at a Pearson VUE testing center, or an online proctored exam through Pearson VUE's OnVUE system at a location of the candidate's choosing.  This is one of the first decisions you will make after registering, and it matters more than it seems. The in-person route means commuting to a certified test center, passing through a formal check-in process with ID verification, and sitting in a supervised room. The online route gives you location flexibility but imposes strict technical requirements. To take the exam via OnVUE, you need a computer running Windows 10 or MacOS 13 or higher, a webcam, microphone, and speaker, and only one display screen — secondary monitors must be disconnected and touch screens are not permitted. A hard-wired Ethernet connection is strongly recommended for the most stable experience. Whichever format you choose, book your slot early. Exam appointments are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis, and candidates must schedule at least 48 hours before their desired start time.

GARP SCR Certificate 2026: What the Exam Actually Looks Like

The SCR exam consists of 80 equally weighted multiple-choice questions, including one multi-part case study, and candidates are allotted a maximum of four hours to complete it. That works out to three minutes per question on average — enough time to think carefully, but not enough to second-guess yourself on every item. The case study is worth noting because it functions differently from standalone questions. It presents a scenario — typically involving an organization navigating a climate risk challenge — and asks several related questions that test your ability to apply multiple concepts in an integrated, realistic context. This is where candidates who studied for understanding rather than memorization have a clear advantage.

The exam covers a broad range of topics including climate change, sustainability, transition planning, and green finance, designed to ensure a well-rounded mastery of the subject. The 2026 curriculum was updated as of December 2025, consistent with GARP's annual review process, so if you are using any materials from a prior year, make sure you have cross-checked them against the current edition available on the GARP Learning Platform.

The Check-In Process and What to Bring

Regardless of whether you sit in-person or online, the identity verification process is non-negotiable. GARP's identification policy has no exceptions — a candidate who does not present an acceptable form of ID on exam day will not be allowed to sit and will forfeit their exam fee, regardless of what identification they may have used in previous exam sittings. Check GARP's official ID policy page well in advance and make sure your ID is current. For in-person candidates, arriving at least 15 to 30 minutes before your scheduled time is strongly advised to allow for check-in, locker storage of personal items, and any brief orientation the center staff may provide.

The Tone and Difficulty of the Questions

This is where official policy ends and real-world experience begins. Candidates who have sat the SCR exam consistently note that the questions lean toward application and judgment rather than straight recall. Knowing the definition of physical risk versus transition risk is not sufficient — you will be asked to evaluate what a specific organization should do given a scenario involving those risks. Questions mirror real exam style, covering concept recall, scenario evaluation, best-action choices, and applied judgment. Some candidates have found the difficulty level higher than the practice exam suggests, with questions that demand synthesis across multiple topic areas. Managing your time across the four-hour window, flagging uncertain questions for review, and resisting the urge to overthink are all skills that matter as much as content knowledge on exam day.

After the Exam

The SCR exam is graded on a pass/fail basis, and results are not instantaneous. Candidates who pass receive an electronic certificate of completion and a complimentary digital badge. If you do not pass, GARP allows a retake in the following exam window. The overall experience — structured, professionally administered, and demanding but fair — reflects the seriousness of the credential itself. Go in prepared, go in rested, and trust the preparation you have put in.
